The communication center consists of four squads each staffed by three full time dispatchers. Additional, six part time dispatchers are available as needed. The list of part time dispatchers will expand to nine in 2009. These dispatchers answer nearly 70,000 calls for the Egg Harbor Township Police Department and over 23,000 calls for the Northfield Police Department. Besides doing Criminal History and Division of Motor Vehicle Inquiries, the Communications Center also dispatches for the Egg Harbor Township Rescue Squad, the Northfield Rescue Squad, five Egg Harbor Township fire companies (three of which have two Stations) and the Northfield Fire Company.
The dispacher simulator (Starz II) that was purchased at the end of 2007 is currently being used by dispatchers to enhance their skills and prepare them for actual call taking. This system provides sounds and effects that simulate actual call taking noises that dispatchers must prepare for in real life.
The dispatcher simulator is currently being used for new communication officers and it is proven to be effective. It is a good measuring tool to determine if someone has the patience to handle volatile calls. And it is just as important for us to find out that a recruit can not handle those types of calls prior to putting all the training into that person only to find out that once they get on the console, that they can not handle those type of calls. This “hands-on” training continues to be a tool utilized by all dispatchers.
