Community Policing

The Egg Harbor Township Police Department's Community policing Unit, made up of police officers within the department, was established by Chief Al Lisicki in November of 1992. In 2002 Chief John Coyle made Community Policing a part of the newly created Juvenile & Community Services Unit which also encompasses the Juvenile Detective Unit, Juvenile Diversion, and the School Resource Officers.

What is Community Policing?

Traditionally, police respond to calls, investigate crimes, and make arrests. This process alone does not reduce crime.

Crime and public safety issues are community problems. No single agency can solve complex social problems by itself. But, by building a partnership between the police, community and local government, safety can be increased in our neighborhoods and business districts.

Community policing recognizes a shared responsibility between the police and the community and encourages a problem solving partnership. Officers work closely with members of the community, addressing the service needs of the local citizens, and encouraging the residents to participate in the solving of community problems.

The focus is on improving communications between police and the community. The exchange of information between the community and the police is essential in the prevention of crime. This communication will also help divert the many calls to the police that are out of our scope of control and that can be handled more efficiently by other agencies. This will allow more time for officers to work on solving crimes in your neighborhood.
