In 2002, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department took progressive steps in it's continuing efforts to reduce and prevent the involvement of our children in the negative aspects of the juvenile justice system. With the help of the community, cooperation of the Atlantic County Juvenile Justice System, and support of various non-profit and religious groups, we established a juvenile diversion program. The Goal of the program is to identify, Egg Harbor Township Residents, at an early age, that have been placed or are at risk of involvement in the juvenile justice system, in the hopes of preventing, eliminating, or reducing their present or future involvement in the juvenile and criminal justice systems.
When diversions are successful, the benefits will include: Reduction of victims and property damage, financial savings to families, victims, and government agencies, stabilization of the family structure and a juvenile transformed into a productive and positive citizen. By establishing the diversion program, we hope to greatly reduce the number of repeat juvenile offenders, saving valuable time of the Police Department and juvenile justice system, while establishing a positive relationship between officers of this department and the community. The diversions will permit law enforcement to divert minor youthful offenders from the juvenile justice system into a five step diversion program which includes, restitution, community service, counseling, participation in an organized activity and a police partnering program as substitution for formal complaints and hearings.
