With this in mind, we provide the following information on how you may file a complaint, how a complaint is investigated, and how it is disposed.
HOW TO COMMEND A POLICE OFFICER OR EMPLOYEE
So often we are all too busy to note when someone does something good in our lives. We only take time to note the bad things. So we ask that if you have the occasion to see a police employee doing outstanding work, we encourage you to tell the employee and us about it as well. There are a number of citizens and groups who have recognized the fine work of our police personnel, and have taken receipt of many letters to date commending the actions of our police personnel. Commendations can be filed directly with a supervisor, written letter, our on-line form located on this website at the bottom of this page.
HOW TO FILE A COMPLAINT
Citizens are encouraged to submit their complaints as soon after the incident as possible. All complaints of officer misconduct shall be accepted from all persons who wish to file a complaint regardless of the hour or day of the week. This includes reports from anonymous sources, juveniles, and persons under arrest or in custody. If available, an Internal Affairs officer will accept the complaint. In the absence of an Internal Affairs officer a Supervisory officer will receive the complaint. If no Supervisory officer can provide immediate assistance any law enforcement officer will accept the complaint. At no time will a Citizen be told to return at a later time to file his/her report. In order to assist and service the public we provide an online complaint form. Reporting persons are encouraged to truthfully and accurately complete as much of the form as possible, but none of the information is mandatory. All complaints that contain sufficient factual information will be investigated. The form is designed to guide a reporting party toward the information generally needed in an investigation, while providing a level of comfort regarding anonymity if desired. In any case where a reporting party has fabricated or intentionally misrepresented material facts to initiate a complaint of officer misconduct, the County Prosecutor will be notified.
The Egg Harbor Township Police Department is vitally interested in the welfare of all citizens and in taking action where our employees have proven derelict in their duties or are guilty of wrongdoing. If it becomes necessary for you to file a complaint, you may be assured that it will be given a fair and thorough investigation.
By the same token, if you have occasion to see a police employee doing outstanding work, we encourage you to tell the employee and us about it.
